SUMMARY

It has been a long journey of COM 125!

This module has really enlightened me about the usage of internet. It has enabled be to discover the insights of internet and its really a big sea of information out there on the web. We have to source out for the right source the right way to find what we need, and definitely everyone will be able to share ideas that its fragile. With the web as the platform, to share ideas it would help to develop any idea to be a successful web business in future.

Not like the usual modules where its just lectures and notes to memorize from, but it was a journey of discoveries that would come handy anytime in the current era of evolving web 2.0 and technologies, and even in the upcoming web 3.0.

Knowledge shared from both lecturer and peers during lecture was really interesting and enlightening. With this module, i not only become a better user of the internet and social media, but i have learnt to discover more and more information through the internet. I must say before taking this module I don't use the internet for anything much besides basic social platforms, emails and for school assignments. However now, I use internet as a form of direction for me to search my end goal and to look far ahead into the future.

Internet makes everyone not only interconnected but also enables us to visualize the impossible and make impossible possible in time to come like the upcoming semantic web.

Keeping this in mind we should not only be users of the internet but also all strive to be the creators of the web tomorrow!

Best Wishes to all for the final exams.=)

The Future Internet

The future of internet will be a more open source; more collaborative, more social. It's mixing the virtual world and the physical world in some seamless way and data transmission speeds will increase globally.

However privacy issues becoming an enormous question mark, because the kind of things that people are able to discover about you and use about you or sell about you, which can be quite scary.

Right now, the Internet will be an infrastructure which supports everything we do in our lives.

As seen from the graph above, it shows the number of Internet Users increasing gradually as the years goes by. Now, we are moving to the Internet of things era which is Web 3.0. I found this video and found that its a good video to summarize the future of internet.

With this com 125 has come to the final post, it has been a long and enriching journey. Best Wishes to All for the final paper and Happy Holidays.

The Future of the Internet by Studying the Innovators

It’s interesting to see that Apple, Google and Microsoft are active competitors that are creating platform in the IT enterprise and have the greatest impacts on markets due to their ever growing competitions in innovations amid each other and other companies.

There is obvious trend in these competitors which is integration. All of them are trying to integrate the competitor’s strengths while creating a new platform for products in the IT enterprise and it is a diverse battleground.

With tablets and clouds coming, there is a huge market on the horizon. Products are all getting better and they are all approaching a strategy junction, as all companies have their own vision of hardwares and contents for consumers business and each of them has based its success in developing new specific markets.

Nevertheless the recent convergence drives them to competition. In this area, Microsoft is clearly the company with the biggest assets and the most structured organization. It hasn’t succeed in maintaining the momentum effect, creating both innovations and value with the web. In contrast, if Google and Apple have succeeded in catching value from new businesses, the success of Google is mostly based on the performance of its algorithms while Apple uses its strengths in marketing.

And the future challenge according to Gartner, Chief Technology Officers and enterprise architects need supporting structures to the new roles of hunting and harvesting. business strategy formulation, business innovation and business strategy execution, as well as behavioral skills — such as the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. This represents a significant opportunity for enterprise architects to make their role more strategic.

These competencies must be combined with more-agile approaches to innovation, such as being able to run experiments. The ability to identify an opportunity, quickly set it up and pilot it, assess the results and decide to expand into another cycle or kill off is needed to support both hunting and harvesting. Enterprise architecture can support this by providing the enabling and diagnostics deliverables as part of the hypothesis formation, setting up the pilot and assessing the results for the future products to be revolutionary in the IT enterprise.

How Internet Shape the Future of Journalism?

The word “Journalism” refers to the activity or profession of writing for newspapers or magazines or of broadcasting news on radio or television. However, today Journalism also includes the activity of writing and broadcasting news on the internet too but it’s not necessarily done by a professional creditable journalist.
Traditional Journalism has central authority, is knowledge centric and is similar to a lecture concept like one-to-many in black and white prints. Bold prints, different font sizes, column sizes for a particular new and pictures that draws extra attention to some news and its more objective to have accurate information in Journalism.

However, in the current era of the digital age Internet portrays news differently than traditional journalism, almost all news are available with a headline and the text are standardized for internet viewers, also creating an interaction between the readers about the news becoming a social connecting platform, it’s a many-to-many concept and relationship centric. Moreover, it encourages transparency in Journalism.

Since it’s so convenient to access the news on the internet most people are selective with the news they want to read. Which can have good and bad sides as all the news online would reach all the readers the way it was suppose to, and since transparency is encouraged on the internet journalism, people’s comments about the news can change how the news in being perceived.

The Internet will definitely give the opportunity for anyone to be a journalist which might be an issue for reliability of the news. While it also gives readers not only black and white pictures and text but also videos, and allows Journalism to be an interactive platform, convenient and easier to retrieve old news anywhere or anytime. Journalism is still revolving with the technology while trying to keep up to the basic values of traditional Journalism while saving cost and ink. Though internet gives on-the-spot coverage, it will definitely not be as creditable, analytic and in-depth as traditional Journalism, as internet news can be in many forms such as status on Facebook, blog postings, tweets or also in a formal news webpage.

Many journalists say that they are scared about the future of Journalism as Internet is changing the credibility and standards of Journalism. But I personally feel that even if Journalism evolves with the internet to be more interactive, transparent and instantly available to readers, as long as the basic principles of Journalism and ethics of Journalism are maintained in the internet Journalism will still be able to have quality news and still survive as a creditable profession.

The Power and Limitations of Internet Political Campaign

Firstly political campaign is an organized effort which seeks to influence the decision making process within a specific group. Political campaigns often refer to electoral campaigns, the most high profile political campaigns are focused on candidates for head of state or head of government, often a President or Prime Minister.

Political campaign contains the ideas that the candidate wants to share with the voters. The message often consists of several issues within the country. The points summarize the main ideas of the campaign and are repeated frequently in order to create a lasting impression with the voters.  Barack Obama ran on a consistent, simple message of "change" throughout his campaign and his messages are crafted carefully, that helps to assure the candidate a victory at the polls. Also increasing the number of followers in his social platforms such as twitter.

Why is it good to have political campaign using internet as the platform?

The main factor is to reach out to the masses easily and within a short period of time, from hour to hour, day to day almost anytime and regularly connecting with the people around. This enables trust to develop and stronger bonds with people and the respective politician.
The most prominent politician is definitely Obama. Our current prime minister Lee Hsien Loong  also has facebook and twitter accounts to get more connected with the people around especially to the citizens in Singapore to be able to feedback to him more easily.

However Internet has limited users, though many people do use the internet not everyone are active in the net itself. As much as the internet has power to advertise and reach out to people, and have the power to advocate but also gives the power to any individual to humiliate anyone on the internet too. Anything can be said and spread around really fast creating chaos or becoming a spark within the internet society.

Thus, there are always pros and cons to everything. Proper governance for the use of internet helps to protect and restrict contents in the internet protects the uses in the internet while strengthening the bond between a politician and the people around to make rooms for improvements fast and possible with the increasing number of internet users.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality! is something that would be incorporated into our daily lives making more information accessible in real time ... we can always get an experience for ourselves and create our own augmented reality like what my group members and i presented in class using the "aurasma" app available for free download in both i-phones and android phones.

Above is a video that shows us what augmented reality will be like in real-life=) so hope you all have an idea of what augmented reality will be like. We can eventually be one of the creator of an application in future having the augmented reality function to enhance the application too!

INTERNET SECURITY

After analyzing a couple of sites advising about online security i have learnt that these are the top rated points that we should be aware to Protect Ourselves online and to sustain Internet Security :

1. Create smart and strong passwords.(numbers and alphabets)

2. Guard Your Personal Information
Never respond to requests for personal or account information online (or over the phone).

3. Don’t Overshare
Don’t divulge your birth date, mother’s maiden name, pet’s name or any other identifying information on social media websites such as Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter.

4. Use email wisely.(Be careful about what information you submit via email. Never send your credit-card information, Social Security number, or other private information via email.)

5. Be smart when using instant messaging (IM) programs. (use nicknames and never except strangers)

6. Shop safely. (check to see if a tiny locked padlock symbol appears at the bottom right of the checkout screen, or that there is a statement on the checkout screen stating that the pages are secure with a security technology vendor. )

7. Subscribe to McAfee computer security service. (McAfee products offer the latest and best combination of software, providing consumers and their home computers with unparalleled, comprehensive protection from cyberspace threats like viruses, spam, malware and identity theft. Always stay up to date for security services)

SO PLEASE REMEMBER THESE AT ALL TIMES WHEN USING THE INTERNET NOTHING IS SAFE OR PRIVATE FOR US USERS, ITS STILL OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT OURSELVES!!!

E-Learning and Virtual Education

Today In developing countries, less than 1 in every 1,000 people has access to a computer compared to nearly 600 in every 1,000 in the developed countries.

Thus, C NET Networks International Media has partnered with UK charity Computer Aid International, to undertake the effort of bridging the digital divide between the developed and the developing parts of the world.

Learning starts with real-world problems. Students should be able to relate to problems and tasks they can handle. Students are given opportunities to see tangible benefits from having these problems solved.

Effective e Learning  or learning itself, is a process. It’s made of stages and a set of interrelated principles, all of which completes the learning process.

Here are the four stages involved in the process of effective e Learning:

1) Activation
E-learning courses should be able to activate students’ prior or existing knowledge, so as to learn and understand the new knowledge acquired.

2) Demonstration
  • Specific portrayal of an object
  • Experimentation or demonstration for procedures
  • Presentation of situations or cases
  • Examples and non-examples for concepts
  • Visualizations for processes
3) Application
Creates opportunities for students to apply what they have learned, to allow them to measure their own progress and correct their mistakes.

4) Integration
Learning can only be effective if it’s made personal. When learners are genuinely motivated to learn, they are able integrate instruction into their lives. All those lessons they learned becomes part of them. Because of this, they are able to improve and demonstrate their skills, acquire new knowledge, and defend or modify such knowledge so that it becomes essential to daily life .

Virtual learning is a social space where students and teacher can interact through threaded discussions or chat. It typically uses Web 2.0 tools for 2-way interaction, and includes a content management system.

This can take place synchronously or asynchronously, in synchronous systems, participants meet in “real time” and teachers conduct live classes in virtual classrooms. Students can communicate through a microphone, chat rights, or by writing on the board. The teacher is able to present lessons through video, PowerPoint, or chatting. The students are able to talk with other students and the teacher, as well as collaborate with each other, answer questions, or pose questions. They can use the tools available through the application to virtually raise their hand, send messages, or answer questions on the screen given by the teacher or student presenter.

In asynchronous learning, which is sometimes called “self-paced” learning, students are expected to complete lessons and assignments independently through the system. Asynchronous courses have deadlines just as synchronous courses do, but each student is learning at his own pace.

A virtual learning environment can also include students’ Content management – creation, storage, access to and use of learning resources;

  • Curriculum mapping and planning – lesson planning, assessment and personalization of the learning experience
  • Learner engagement and administration – managed access to learner information and resources and tracking of progress and achievement
  • Communication and collaboration - emails, notices, chat, wikis, blogs
The term "collaborative learning" refers to an instruction method in which students at various performance levels work together in small groups toward a common goal. Students are responsible for one another's learning as well as their own.

In spite of these advantages, most of the research studies on collaborative learning have been done at the primary and secondary levels. As yet, there is little empirical evidence on its effectiveness at the college level.

However, the need for noncompetitive, collaborative group work is emphasized in much of the higher education literature. Also, majority of the research in collaborative learning has been done in non-technical disciplines.

The advance in technology, changes in the organizational infrastructure are emphasizing more on teamwork within the workforce. Creative thinking, solving problems, and making decisions as a team are essential qualities.

Therefore, the development and enhancement of critical-thinking skills through collaborative learning is one of the primary goals of technology education. In addition, ongoing development of technology is important to keep up with the evolution of technology as books are becoming replaced by computers and within that the online community.

Social Media & the effect on the Modern Society

I personally like this video, as it shows the effects of social media and our society. Social media has both good and the bad side, but as individuals we should know that is not that social media is good or bad but its how we use it in our lives that impacts the effects of being beneficial or a threat to our future.

WHAT WILL INTERNET BE LIKE 5 YEARS FROM NOW...

There is no specific answer to what the internet will be like exactly 5 years from now, but from the current trend we can see that internet will definitely become an utility in our lives and will be more faster in speed. Faster in speed also means that data intensive files can be sent to anyone at any part of the world like a real time 3D or HD video; contents that provide more than just audio and video such as the ability to touch something remotely would be possible!

However; the internet in the future can also get more complicated if more data are available on the internet that might be accessible to all users easily soon there are chances for the internet to be irrelevant. Without proper management, internet can be just a source of advertisements, inappropriate contents such as pornography and ugly moments of a person's personal history.

Thus, the future of  internet will be sustained and will evolve, only if there is proper maintenance and specific laws to manage contents and sites restricted to specific age groups and to regulate the number of advertisements. Users of the internet should also be provided with relevant knowledge as to how to use social platforms as the internet is evolving to become more interactive.

However, we should always consider the fact that internet would serve as a source of knowledge than compared to an experience for an individual.

INTRO TO COM 125!

Knowing the history will be a good start for all of us to know where is the INTERNET leading us to.

Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that uses standard Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP).

It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries an extensive range of information resources and services, namely World Wide Web(WWW), inter-linked hypertext documents and infrastructure to support email

As seen above, the usage of internet is revolving and changing over the years and its definitely an innovation that is a major part of all our lives. Nevertheless, Internet has not only become our handy source of knowledge but has also has redefined businesses and widen the ability of learning and many other changes that we are seeing around the world today.
